Happy Birthday, Beautiful Husband

When I look at you…I still see the twenty-one year old I fell in love with. So strong. So sexy. Your eyes filled with the hopefulness of your youth. The falling was so fast and hard, that I think the love actually hurt. We were destined for one another, and we had no idea of the storms God was waiting to bring us through.

Nineteen years later…

When I look at you…I see my past, my present, my future. You are stronger. You are sexier. Your eyes are now filled with the clarity of experience. I am still falling, but the love feels so good. Our destinies are being fulfilled daily, and God now faithfully reveals the rainbows after the storms.

Happy 40th Birthday, Beautiful Husband. Time has only made you better. I love you more than all the beats of all the hearts ever created.

Then, now, and always – your soulmate…D

Priceless Memories

Organizing and packing a large family for two days out of town…Tiring.

Remembering every last detail down to the diapers and the granola bars…Difficult.

Cleaning out the suburban to get ready for the trip…Nasty.

Fueling up a vehicle that will carry seven passengers…Expensive.

Traveling with a grumpy one and three year old…Frustrating.

Spending $82 to sleep on a concrete mattress with a confused toddler…Irritating.

(sigh)…

Watching my amazing, beautiful, athletic, princess of a daughter (and her team) compete in a two-day volleyball tournament…PRICELESS.

Happy Valentine’s LIFE

It is said that February 14th originally became a lover’s holiday when the ancient Romans celebrated Lupercalia, an annual fertility festival.

Circa 496 AD, the then Pope, Gelasius, declared February 14th to be St. Valentine’s Day, a Christian feast day.

On St. Valentine’s Day in AD 1400, a court is opened in Paris. It’s a High Court of Love, dealing with affairs of the heart, and shortly after that the first recorded Valentine’s note is written by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans, to his beloved.

The growth and constant traditional transitions continued through the mid-eighteen century when the passing of love notes became popular in England, through the mid-nineteenth century when Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, started producing cards in the United States.

I know, I know…This is all very interesting! Now I’ll get to the point:

Love is love is love. I am proud to be a member of such a beautiful, mixed-race family. The Sparrows, and thousands of other perfectly blended partnerships, have the honor of being key players in that constant traditional transition I just spoke of. I doubt that during any of the above fore-mentioned moments in history did the couples celebrating Valentine’s Day look as lovely as we do! Oh yesLOVELY, and do you know what makes us so? Because we love with our whole hearts, our souls, regardless of the differences in our complexion, the texture of our hair, the spices in our food, or the language we first spoke.

I feel confident that people like us are helping humanity inch ever closer to that perfect, Biblical, unconditional love we should all be striving for…and I believe that one, little day in February is just too little time to acknowledge such a glorious thing! So, to my perfectly created husband, and to all of you (Black, Brown, Cream, and All-in-betweens), Happy Valentine’s Day Life! Keep loving each other the way you do and maybe, someday, the world will catch up.

Still The One

Mr. Sparrow,

I love you, I love you, I love you. You are still, and always, the one for me…the only one for me. I listen to this song, and it makes me smile and cry at the same time, because it is about us. Us…what an honor to be half of that, and what a blessing that you are the other half.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1VWYxgE3_4

Through the trials and triumphs, you have been the constant. Our permanent adoration for each other, always far outlasting our temporary anger at each other. Our love’s endurance catching it’s second wind just at the moment we thought we might quit. Our tears flowing on so many occasions but, more often than not, their source was joy…or pride…or the welcoming of one, two, three, four, five little Sparrows.

You are still the man of my dreams, I still find solace in your arms, a smile still finds my lips every time I see your face, my body still craves your touch and my skin still quivers underneath it, I still cherish our past…and I still can’t wait to grow old with you.

You’re still the one…Happy Valentine’s Day, Baby.

Thirty O’Clock

It’s naptime, according to me anyway. D’Lo is (as usual) resisting with all his might. He’s whining…and he’s wiggling…and he’s tossing and turning. Finally, I hear him say:

D’Lo: “It’s thirty o’clock!”

Me:  “It’s thirty o’clock?! What are you talking about?”

D’Lo:  “It’s thirty o’clock…time to get up!”

For anyone wondering, he never did go to sleep…Darn that thirty o’clock!
